Entry from: Bologna, Italy Entry Title: “Bologna” Entry: “At the end of the second world war the Italian-Yugoslav border was cast with the Slovenian city of Gorica just inside Italy. Tito’s very communist reaction was to build a new city (the imaginatively monikered Nova Gorica) immediately across the Yugoslav border so the two cities effectively merged but with the iron curtain down the middle. With tensions presumably running high at the time there was no consideration of joining up railway networks which now results in the slightly annoying situation of arriving at the Nova Gorica station, walking across the road into Italy and then having to catch an Italian bus to Gorica train station. We arrived in Bologna in the evening and effectively saw all the sights on our first walk around before dinner – the heart of the city is quite compact but all the streets are arcaded and the buildings typically Italian (semi falling down) so it is very atmospheric. As big fans we got straight to work on sampling the bolognese, or ragu, taking in 5 between us over the next 3 days, less tomatoey than we are led to believe from Signori Dolmio. Did some church and museum hopping the next day and scaled the 499 step ‘leaning tower of Bologna’ for some cracking city views. More bolognese that evening and we were ready to …
