ELVIS PRESLEY HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES ON A MODERN ICON

ELVIS PRESLEY HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES ON A MODERN ICON

Elvis Presley has made a mark in history beyond his lifetime. While not a giant historical figure on the scale of Plato. Julius Caesar, Washington, Napoleon or Stalin, he still commands attention. Presley has a legacy that is still controversial as a man who rose up and made it to the top of his field, rock ‘n’ roll music.

Presley has a cultural legacy in the English language with expressions that few other artists have. He is part of the culture in ways that go beyond the music. Rock music in the 1950s spurred social change and Presley was not the first, but permitted others to follow.

Flavor Flav: The Icon The Memoir Reviews

Flavor Flav: The Icon The Memoir

From his twenty-five years as a member of one of the most influential hip hop groups of all time, to his career as a television personality, the word that best describes Flavor Flav is ‘iconic.’  Clock-wearing, colorful and sometimes controversial, William Drayton—known affectionately all around the world as simply ‘Flav’—finally tells all.

Josephine Baker in Art and Life: The Icon and the Image

Josephine Baker in Art and Life: The Icon and the Image

Josephine Baker (1906-1975) was a dancer, singer, actress, author, politician, militant, and philanthropist, whose images and cultural legacy have survived beyond the hundredth anniversary of her birth. Neither an exercise in postmodern deconstruction nor simple biography, Josephine Baker in Art and Life presents a critical cultural study of the life and art of the Franco-American performer whose appearances as the savage dancer Fatou shocked the world.   Although the study remains firmly anchored in Josephine Baker’s life and times, presenting and challenging carefully researched biographical facts, it also offers in-depth analyses of the images that she constructed and advanced. Bennetta Jules-Rosette explores Baker’s far-ranging and

Timeless Cities: An Architect’s Reflections on Renaissance Italy (Icon Editions)

Timeless Cities: An Architect’s Reflections on Renaissance Italy (Icon Editions)

For Italian city builders more than a thousand years ago, the urban realm was the great theater where their best aspirations were played out, the place where society said the most substantial things about who they were and what they longed for. In this masterful blend of art and cultural history, architect David Mayernik reveals how the very different cities of Venice, Rome, Florence, Siena, and Pienza were all literally designed to be both models of the mind and images of heaven. Mayernik takes the reader on a journey into the past in Timeless Cities, but he also explains why these city-building ideas remain relevant today. For those travelling on vacation or appreciating the art and architecture of Italy from home, Mayernik helps bring th
