The brilliancy of the song lies in its simplicity. Words with a meaning transport the melody. Knopfler speaks, but his guitar sings. All of the musicians were at their peak at that time. In my eyes this is the ultimate rendition of “brothers in arms”.

Actually no, he’s not. If you watch the 4 part doco on him, he explains where these particular lines come from. But as he says, we all make up, take from songs whatever we want, he doesn’t care. He mentions how a US tank group linked up 8 tanks and played this across the radio after a battle in the Gulf War. Pretty amazing guy, without question.

This gets more and more epic eveytime I hear it. Mr. Knopfler defines the word legendary over and over again. His concerts are…beyond exceptional!
Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour also have another thing in common: both of them don’t give a damn what they wear, their clothes look like old, worn pajama. They don’t need any glitter, sequins, cool leather jackets, studs, nothing. They are Gods, and that is quite enough.

Sorry, but it’s clearly about War.. The first line confirms it .. “These mist covered mountains, are home now for me… But my home is the low lands, and it always will be”.. He is clearly talking about a soldier at post, in a far away land (who is dying, or is dead)..
