Great book for nature and mystery lovers!,
In this enjoyable “eco-mystery,” teenager Kenzie Ryan moves to the Florida Keys and discovers someone is poaching the endangered Key Deer…and they may even be after Molly, the doe Kenzie rescued from a canal. Kenzie not only has to make new friends and deal with her feelings for Angelo, a local fisherman boy, but solve the case of the disappearing deer as well.
Much of the charm of this book is author Doerr’s extensive research on the Keys and the deer, which she weaves seamlessly into an action-packed, engaging story. Any residents, visitors, or fans of the Florida Keys will be delighted by the setting, which is almost a character in itself. Doerr masters the “Green Teen” genre by mixing romance, suspense, and humor with current ecological issues. Her upcoming book, Stakeout, is sure to follow in this tradition.
I highly recommend this book for teen and tween readers who enjoy a quick-paced, fun mystery with a great natural setting.

|an engaging young teen environmental investigative mystery,
Following her parents’ divorce, Kenzie Ryan left New York City to live with her mom Maggie on Big Pine Key 30 miles from Key West and 100 from the Mainland. . Hardly settled in the wildlife refuge location, Kenzie rescues a Key deer from drowning with the help of local Angelo who explains the animal is part of an endangered species.
However, Kenzie learns someone is poaching and killing the dwindling Key deer populace. She and Angelo team up to catch the poacher, unaware of the danger as the hunter soon changes game from deer to stalking amateur sleuthing teens.
Island Sting is an engaging young teen environmental investigative mystery starring two solid young caring teenagers. The story line is fast-paced and the whodunit contains several viable suspects. Readers will enjoy the adventures of Kenzie and Angelo as they try to protect the endangered Key deer from a poacher. Note that this is a major rewrite of preadolescent tale Kenzie’s Key targeting a slightly older audience and includes recent events like a reference to White House party crashing for instance.

|Fast-paced Mystery,
Author Bonnie J. Doerr sucks you in from the very first word and doesn’t let go until the climax of this fast-paced mystery, Island Sting. I read her sea turtle mystery, Stakeout, and loved it. That one was a bit longer and more involved, but equally as compelling.
This one is a quick read. You can just breeze through. You’re guaranteed to fall in love with both the heroine, Kenzie, who is impulsive and speaks her mind but is caring toward people and animals, and the hero, Angelo, dark, handsome, and mysterious. At times he’s prickly, but as time goes on, you find out why. And that makes you care even more.
A budding romance, struggles dealing with her parents’ recent divorce, and a move to the country from NY City give Kenzie plenty of emotional problems to deal with, but she manages to live life large and spend her energy on things that count–making life better for others and the world around her.
Kenzie’s big heart leads her to endangers her own life as she tries to rescue the endangered Key deer from poachers, help her friends, and organize an environmental cleanup. The tension builds as Kenzie puts together clues as she searches for the poacher, but she ends up trapped herself. Lots of high action, danger, and suspense.
Every classroom, library, homeschooler, and animal rescue facility should have a copy of this book. It’s one middle graders and young teens will read again and again.
Oh, and if you aren’t familiar with the Key deer, which I wasn’t, I was fascinated to discover that they’re the size of a German shepherd dog. These miniature deer are only found in the Florida Keys.
