His career started at the age of 15 as a dancer and singer of the pop band Take That in 1989, which he left in 1995 to launch his solo career. He was raised in Stoke-on-Trent, with a sister, Sally, by Peter and Janet Williams, their parents. He attended Mill Hill Primary School and St Margaret Ward’s Roman Catholic School, Tunstall.
