This book is intended for college students who would like to make frequent reference to the teachings of the Church in their class room as well as private study and it serves the purpose well. Important documents of the Church are arranged under different topics of Catholic doctrine and are very easy to refer to. I have found this book more helpful than going to Densinger and most of the relevant and important documents are here. The documents are beautifully indexed with a topical index as well as a general index. There is also a table of reference to Denzinger’s Enchiridion Symbolorum. It is indeed a very good contribution to the students of theology by the Jesuit Fathers of St Mary’s College, Kansas.

I think the correct title is “The Church Teaches:…”, March 8, 1998

This (if it is the same) book was first published before Vatican II. It is well indexed, and the Jesuit Fathers of St Mary’s have done an excelent job of letting the Church speak for herself. This book should be on every Catholic’s study shelf along with the Bible, the new Catechism set, and the Jerome Bible Commentary. My dog-eared copy has served me well by demonstrating the consistency of Catholic doctrine through history. I hope it comes back into print soon!

It is always difficult to quickly lay hands on Church Documents in English translation when doing research or for historical comparison – or just curiosity. Here we have a very handy compendium of the development of doctrine. Nothing is perfect and as the editors point out the book is for students primarily who can expect their professors to widen the horizons of reference and research. One simple example of value is the laying out of all the Creeds, seen usually only in the two “official” Apostles and Nicean Creeds. The work is dated 1954 so a word of caution: it is pre-Vatican II and must be viewed in light of documents that are from 1954 onwards; e.g., the documents of Vatican II and the official Catechism of the Catholic Church. One slight irritation is that the margin references are not explained at the beginning of the book. Another caution: in academic circles it is now normal to use the NRSV translation for study and not those used in the book. It is what is says it is , a source book for many Church documents; as such it is valuable and recommended to students and priests and deacons.
