The Body wasn’t a Fender and the neck was a fingerboard maple neck that looked sketchy, it had been planed so flat it was terrible so we put a Schecter neck on it. The whole guitar was a basket case. My memory could be failing but that is what I remember (pretty clearly). Basically Mark could pick up the most unplayable guitar in the shop but it never mattered, he always could play it and get his tone.”
Great to see THIS again here!

Judging by the Likes and Dislikes.. 1 person is an abject idiot.
this was the best line up of the group, Pick Whiters on drums was amazing!
These 4 guys are dIRE sTRAITS. This sound was never duplicated by Mark’s other drummers or rythm player’s
He sings like a cross between Bob Dylan and a corpse.
MK owns the stratocaster
MK’s got one of the best vibrato’s ever
This concert with its geeky German fans and incredible music performance is one of a kind! Knopfler is unreal and the entire band is so tight you would think it was a studio recording….one of the most under rated bands of its era….
I was 15 years old in 1979 and I’m still fan of Dire Strait today.

Essentially Dire straits is not really DS without Knopfler either. Saw a few members are doing some sort of reunion in May, but Knopfler isn’t there.
1978-1985 was just their absolute awesome period:) Thanks Looping for uploading!
So great to see/hear Pick Withers on (Eddy Ryan) drums! Knopfler without him is like Tom Petty without Stan Lynch…
Can’t believe all these great Straits videos are turning up – it’s brilliant to see this version was so filmed. In The Gallery is awesome, as are many of them…. thanks a million for posting this up – made my week! I agree that Withers was a very original drummer and contributed a lot, it’s quite incredible to think that it’s him on Making Movies as well – rocking like a mutha!
I think Mark would find it difficult to better his own playing in the future, because for me, here, he’s unbeatable!
No fukin way the whole thing no way …soo cool.
@PeterVonRock Looking at this old film, it’s clear to me that it’s Wither’s drumming as much as Knopflers playing and writing that gave them their distinctive sound….and it’s very distinctive; they would never sound quite the same after everyone went their own way.
Thanks for the concert!!!
Looping, this is a rare gift! Many many thanks for all the work and time you have put into this. Dire Straits had a special kind of energy and this concert captures them at their leanest and meanest. You are a genius!
Just watch (and listen to) Pick Withers here… his drumming is just FANTASTIC!!!
FANTASTIC!!!
Man, Dire Straits is my favorite band, is have an entire show from the late 70′s, what a gift.

For me, is the best moment of Dire Strait
THANK YOU! never seen before…….
Se agradece por el recital completo, qué mejor que escuchas los primeros 2 discos de esta banda, que sin duda fueron los mejores.
Ese sonido característico que tuvieron durante la primera época, tan limpio, te pone los pelos de punta.
Un saludo!
